Ramen Keisuke Tori King (100AM)

A random ramen craving on a weekday had me searching for place in the CBD area to fix it. Since I could not decide between Ramen Keisuke Tonkotsu King (“Tonkotsu King”) at Orchid Hotel or Ramen Keisuke Tori King (“Tori King”) at 100AM, I left it to the queues to decide. The line at Tonkotsu King was insane that day, so it was clear where lunch would be. Although there was a queue at Tori King as well, but it moved pretty fast, so we managed to get a seat in under 5 minutes.

Tori King is the third ramen venture in Singapore by Chef Keisuke Takada, winner of the 2011 Tokyo Ramen Championships. Unlike the immensely popular Tonkotsu King, Tori King specialises in chicken. Not knowing what to expect as it was my first chicken broth ramen, I decided to heed the waitress’ recommendation and ordered the black spicy ramen.

Diners are also each given a mortar and pestle with a mixture of black and white sesame seeds which serves as a good time filler while waiting for the ramen to be served.

In addition to the complimentary marinated bean sprouts, Tori King offers free flow of hard boiled eggs as well. Now you can eat your ramen in peace without having to ration your toppings with each mouthful of noodles!

Black spicy ramen ($12.90): Thin noodles in chicken broth served with black fungus, flavoured egg (add on) and a giant piece of grilled black pepper chicken leg. The chicken broth was surprisingly tasty and luscious, but it got a little too rich for me towards the end of my meal. As the broth itself is rather rich, you may want to go easy on the chicken oil. The star of the ramen for me was the evenly grilled chicken leg. Well seasoned and so tender that the meat just falls of the bone. Ladies will be pleased to know that you can still eat pretty because the chicken leg is soft and tender enough to be managed with chopsticks alone. Top up $1 for seaweed, $2 for a flavoured egg and $4 for the works.

Overall, this place is recommended for its scrumptious ramen, efficient service and the flexibility of customising your ramen (choose your preferred texture of ramen, toppings and intensity of flavour).

Ramen Keisuke Tori King is located at 100 Tras St #03-15, 100AM Shopping Mall and is open from 1130 to 2200. Do note that the restaurant only accepts walk-ins.

It is a short walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT station and parking spaces are available at the mall itself.
