The 1872 Clipper Tea Co.

[Invited Tasting]

I am a tea addict. I drink an average of two to three cups a day and I get excited by food that has tea incorporated in it e.g. earl grey tea ice-cream, tea smoked duck etc. So imagine my excitement when I received an invite to an afternoon tea appreciation by Clipper Tea. I am no stranger to Clipper Tea because it is served at the cafe where I get my daily fix of tea.

The afternoon tea session was held at the Tea Bar at PasarBella, featuring a selection tea snacks, desserts, confectionery and of course, freshly brewed tea.

[Iced] Milk Wave ($5): tea with milk. This is essentially the local Teh Peng that we are used to, velvety in taste and fragrant in aroma. Suitable for those who prefer a safe and familiar option. A hot version of this is available as well.

[Iced] Blissful Berries ($5):  a caffeine-free mix of raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries. This slightly tart and sour tea is perfect for those who are looking for a refreshing caffeine-free pick-me-up.

[Iced] Summer Passion Fruit ($5): blend of passion fruit and black tea. My personal favourite! Sweet, tangy and and addictive, you can definitely count on this thirst-quenching drink to cool you down in the sweltering heat. Smart tip: when brewing this tea at home, substitute sugar with honey. Not only is honey the healthier option, it lifts the flavour of the passion fruit as well!

[Hot] Healing Garden ($4): caffeine-free herbal infusion of ginger, lemongrass with a touch of citrus flavour. Looking for something to warm you up on a cold rainy or perhaps a soothing drink on a hectic day? This herbal infusion will do just that. Besides, the rainy season is approaching and what better way to get through a cold gloomy day than having a comforting cup of this infusion?

To complement its extensive range of teas, Clipper Tea has recently introduced a range of tea-infused and tea-inspired snacks, also affectionately known as the “Tea Escapade”.

Earl Grey Tea Cookies ($5 for a pack of 5): Hands down the winner of the three. The delicate flavour of the earl grey tea goes so well with the buttery taste of these crumbly, melt-in-your mouth goodies. Grab a pack or two because once you start, it’ll be hard to stop.

Alcohol Fruit Cake ($3.50 each): Moist, fruity and slightly sweet, this would probably appeal to those who have a sweeter tooth. Black tea is the recommended tea accompaniment.

Mini Choco Cup ($10 for a set of 3): Choose from white, milk and dark chocolate-coated almond flakes. Chocolate! Need I say more?

Savour in a Ship ($12 for a set, $18 for 2 sets): Spoilt for choice? Go for the works! Each set comes in a cute looking ship with a tasting platter of three tea snacks and a hot drink of your choice. If hot drink is not your thing, you can opt to change it to an iced drink for an additional $1 or making it a float by topping up an additional $2. What are you waiting for? Grab a friend and head down for tea!

While you are at the Tea Bar, don’t forget to check out the selection of loose teas and teabags, tea wares and accessories available for sale as well. I particularly enjoyed going through the portholes and inhaling the invigorating scent of teas. The porthole display is part of the nautical themed design which pays tribute to the historic clipper ships used in the transportation of tea in the past.

In line with the National Day celebrations this month, a creative tea concoction is also available at the Tea Bar from 2 to 25 August at PasarBella. This is none other than the Chendol Tea! A black tea based drink, it contains everything that we are familiar with in a Chendol dessert – coconut milk, gula melaka and chendol jelly. Oh so sinful but satisfying.

Think you’ve got a deserving photo of you pairing food with a cup of tea from the Clipper Tea selection? Hesitate no longer and participate in the Instagram contest! Contest runs till 31 August and the top 5 photos with the highest number of “likes” get to walk away with a Vintage Tea chest!

Special thanks to the Jacintha and the Clipper Tea team for the invite and warm hospitality at the tea appreciation session.

The Tea Bar is located in PasarBella and it is open on Mon – Fri: 0930 to 1900 and Sat & Sun: 0930 to 2000.

PasarBella is located at The Grandstand (formerly known as Turf City) and it is easily accessible by car or public transport. Free shuttle services are also available daily at designated bus stops.
